As many of you already know, February is now a universally-accepted month honoring the memory and music of James DeWitt Yancey, known as Jay Dee, Pay Jay, J Dilla (and other nomenclatures). Even though his fans and followers have relished any and all joints bearing his name (sometimes being disappointed because many of the songs were not the final vision of Dilla), there comes a point where we will no longer hear unreleased music from the genius behind the MPC. This should be a precursor to the final official release for Dilla-approved music for public consumption entitled The Diary (due April 15th as a collaborative effort between the Yancey estate and Mass Appeal Records).
Eighteen instrumentals deep, this collection should inspire and give a glimpse into the artistry that illuminated the skies and then dimmed too soon. Take a listen via Spotify album stream, then purchase on iTunes.
